Apple is bringing back their AI summaries of news apps and hopefully it’ll get it right this time.
The Apple Intelligence feature first made an appearance in iOS 18 before being scrapped in the 18.3 update because the AI summary tool kept feeding erroneous headlines to users. It was supposed to simply aggregate news stories across various apps into one simple, headline-driven story.
This is a great idea, if it worked. What was happening in practice is Apple Intelligence was either grabbing largely irrelevant information from articles and sticking them in the summary or – doing what AI sometimes does – making stuff up entirely.
It’s not that this was happening all of the time or to everybody but the instances reported were egregious. And with the onslaught of misinformation and bald-faced lying permeating the internet, we don’t need our robots doing it too. That’s a little too human if you ask me.
Apple thinks they’ve fixed this issue and is bringing the feature back in the newest iOS 26 beta. To start using it you’ll need to install the new iOS beta. Once you do that you’ll get a pop-up notification asking whether or not you want to use the feature and letting you pick which apps you want included. This is also new as there was no opt-in or opt-out before.
In addition to being better at sourcing and summarizing news as well as allowing you to opt in, they’re making an effort to be more transparent so you know what you’re getting yourself into. All AI summaries going forward will be in italics with the words “Summarized by Apple Intelligence” to really call attention to it.
You can even tap through to find the original app notifications that Apple Intelligence is drawing from. This allows you to read the source of the summary and verify its accuracy.
Now this is a beta, so they’ll want feedback to make sure their resident AI is behaving. There’s a new option to report any subpar summaries.
